Imagine an art medium that calls you out to play with paint and sculpture–captivating your senses with tactile surfaces, lustrous depth and the fragrant smell of beeswax. Welcome to the ancient medium of encaustic painting! This two part series of inspiring workshops is designed for new and continuing encaustic students. New students that enroll in Part I, Beginning Encaustic Painting,  do not need to have any encaustic or painting experience.

In the first workshop, Part I, beginning encaustic guests will receive complete basic encaustic painting instruction. This will include support /panel preparation, smooth vs textured surface techniques, and color layering and suspension. Students will also learn to embellish pieces with stenciling, incising and paper mixed media / collage.

Student who would like to further their encaustic skills (or who already have basic encaustic experience) can register for the second class, Part II Intermediate / Advanced Encaustic Painting. In the second class we will do a very quick review of encaustic basics and then move right in to prepping panels and warming up with mixed media collage. Several mixed media processes will be demonstrated in the morning including the use of bleach pens, joint compound  / metal stenciling, and the intro of oil pigment sticks. In the afternoon session we'll move into the favorite segment titled "Burn Baby Burn, guaranteed to enthrall the inner pyro in each of us. We will step outside and work with burning wood, varnish burns, and joint compound burns and alcohol ink burns, all of which produce unique and stunning effects. Students will then return to the indoor studio space to continue layering and embellishing their mixed media pieces.
